Giving up a hobby

It’s been a while since I posted anything here. Sorry for that. I haven’t had much opportunity to pursue my hobby recently. On the one hand, I moved to Oldenburg last summer – and thus further away from my equipment. On the other hand, apart from a few private parties, there was no more opportunity to use my PA system. In addition, I no longer have a suitable place to set up the Grand Orgue in our new apartment. So there was little to tell.

My PA system had its last performance in August 2024, on my birthday. I celebrated it in style at my dad’s house – with friends and family. Of course, the music had to be right! However, my dad’s homemade home electronics messed things up for me when a short circuit fried both my iPad (music source) and the mixer. Fortunately, I was able to borrow a mixer in time, but it still put a big damper on things. In any case, the iPad was beyond saving.

The times I have been able to use the PA have been a lot of fun. However, transportation, storage and maintenance are simply too difficult in comparison – especially when I’m the only one who appreciates the quality of it. For others, the only important thing is that there is music at all. It’s difficult for people outside the scene to comprehend how much effort goes into everything – even the specially soldered cables.

As I may have mentioned, I had bought an adapter for my electric car so that I could use the charging socket as a 230V outlet. My plan was to be able to use the PA system on the move – perhaps at a lake or somewhere on a field. I really would have liked to do that. But unfortunately it never came to it.

The decision

After much deliberation, I came to the decision to sell my PA system. The tops sold the quickest, followed by the controller. The power amplifier was a bit more difficult, nobody wanted the subwoofers. Until a few weeks ago when a couple of guys from East Germany wanted to expand their first PA. I’m selling the speaker stands on Friday, then all that’s left are the cables. It really hurts to give up the system that I’ve saved up, built and optimized over a long period of time.

However, this “hobby abandonment” only affects the PA system. I will keep the Grand Orgue and simply specialize more in hi-fi in the future. Even if I can’t use the speakers in my current apartment due to lack of placement, they will definitely be used again – at the latest when I have a house. They’re not getting any worse 😉

Until then, they will simply remain part of the decoration in our home office…
